Day 4: The City on the Uzh River
The Uzhgorod Castle of the XIII-XVIII centuries is the most ancient fortress of Transcarpathia and the most valuable historical and architectural monument of the city of Uzhgorod. The name of the city has had its origin in the Ungvar Castle ("Castle on the River"), which at the beginning of the XX century has changed its name to the Slavonic ‘Uzhgorod’.
1. Tour of the Uzhgorod Castle. The Uzhgorod Castle is best preserved among the twelve medieval castles in Transcarpathia. The Castle rises above the city on a hill of volcanic origin in the valley of the Uzh River; it was built as a typical and similar to the Western European castles. As in all the good reputed castles the Uzhgorod Castle also has its ghosts. The Castle’s millennial walls have seen many battles and struggles, romantic stories and intrigues, had the owners of various dynasties. According to legend, the secret underground passages connect the Uzhhorod Castle not only with its vicinities, but also with the Nevitsky Castle, located at a distance of 10 km. Be sure we will tell you about the "witch's pit” and the legend of the White Virgin. The exhibition "Torture Room" consists of exhibits of various instruments of torture of the Inquisition times. In any case, the design and content of the exhibition will not leave anyone indifferent.
2. Tasting of Transcarpathian wines in the cellars of the Castle. The combination of the refined interior of the Middle Ages style and the design features of the premises of cellars preserved till now create a unique atmosphere. But the most important advantage of the tasting cellars is, undoubtedly, a collection of the best Transcarpathian wines.
